Understanding the Mind of Addiction

A first-person account of addiction, shaped through song and spoken word

Why This Work Exists

Becoming My Addiction was created to explain addiction from the inside. Not as a moral failure, but as a progressive condition that quietly takes control.

Based on the lived experience of Andrew Collett, this project traces how addiction begins as coping, becomes dependency, and ultimately causes harm not only to the individual but to everyone around them.

This work exists to encourage earlier understanding, earlier intervention, and a more honest conversation about the real cost of addiction.

How to Listen

Because this work unfolds psychologically rather than chronologically, it benefits from being heard in order, as a single unfolding story. Each song represents a psychological state within addiction rather than a specific event. Following along with the listening guide can help provide context for what is happening beneath the surface. This work is meant for attentive listening.

About the Creator

Andrew Collett is based in Muskoka, Canada. He has been sober for over five years and is the CEO of an international company in the creative space. Outside of his professional work, Andrew is a photographer, an avid nature lover, and a quiet explorer of the human experience. He is also a father.

Alongside his writing and creative practice, Andrew speaks publicly about addiction, with a focus on helping others understand what happens inside the mind of addiction and why it is so often misunderstood.

He chose music alongside writing because it deepens the emotional experience of the subject matter, allowing listeners to feel what addiction is like, not just understand it intellectually. Becoming My Addiction is a narrative album drawn from lived experience, created to bring clarity, seriousness, and honesty to addiction.
